Cabinet Approves Annual Salary Deduction of Govt Employees for Health Insurance Plans
The Punjab government has decided to implement an annual premium deduction from employee salaries under their health insurance program.
Back in October, the health department made their decision regarding this salary deduction and wrote directly to both departments for approval by provincial cabinet.
Commencing January 1st 2024, all government employees will have Rs4,350 deducted annually as their contribution towards health insurance programs. This deduction applies even where both partners work at government organizations.
Where couples serve as government employees together, any deduction will apply only to one partner's pay.
Finance Secretary Mujahid Sherdil announced that the decision to withhold premium payments from salaries has been approved, starting from January 1, 2024 onward. Deductions will continue indefinitely.

This development marks a critical step forward towards providing healthcare coverage to government employees and their families, via the health insurance program which should offer comprehensive medical benefits, while alleviating some of the financial pressure caused by healthcare expenses.
While many have welcomed the program with open arms, some issues regarding affordability of premiums for lower income employees have arisen. But in spite of such criticisms and any subsequent adjustments needed, implementation continues apace with many participants still gratefully participating.
Government authorities have promised that various steps will be taken to make their programs accessible and beneficial to all its beneficiaries.
